Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these steps in order to effectively clean up your credit report.

Step 1
Pull Your Credit Reports
Get free reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. Review each for errors, unknown accounts, or outdated negative items.
Step 2
Identify Errors and Negative Items
Highlight anything inaccurate: wrong balances, accounts you do not recognize, late payments you dispute, or items older than 7 years.
Step 3
Write and Send Dispute Letters
Use the CFPB sample letter to dispute errors in writing. Send via certified mail to each bureau reporting the error. Keep copies.
Step 4
Follow Up on Disputes
Bureaus must respond within 30-45 days. If an item cannot be verified, it must be removed. If unsatisfied, escalate to the CFPB.
Step 5
Build Positive Credit History
While disputes are processed, pay all bills on time, keep utilization below 30%, and avoid opening new accounts unnecessarily.
Step 6
Monitor and Maintain
Set up free monitoring alerts and review your reports monthly. A clean credit profile requires ongoing attention.
